We have just completed our first unit looking at classification. We have learned how to use a classification key, features and characteristics of organisms, and we have concluded with an experiment looking at micro-organisms and discovered which food yeast likes best. We planned our investigation and carried out a fair test.
This year we will be looking at the following topics which will provide coverage of our curriculum objectives:
We will be using power of reading texts and the literacy shed to provide stimulating literacy opportunities aswell as cross curricular opportunities to write.
In science we will be looking at Classification, evolution and inheritence, light, circuits and health and lifestyles.
We will cover sex and relationships education towards the end of the year.
NEW ACADEMIC YEAR 2017-2018|
We have had an extremely busy term this term and have achieved lots.
Science - We have been learning about the classification system. We looked at the work of Carl Linneus and how to it used today and we also created our own creature using his system. We did lots of classifying. The children especially enjoyed classifying sweets!!!
In Literacy we continued to learn about Shackleton and did lots of pieces of writing using this as a stimulus. In author week, we studied Macbeth and the children loved it that much that we decided to continue with it long after author week.
Maths - Over the last few weeks we have been introduced to finding out the 'mean average', algelbra and pie charts. This is in addition to building on what we already know.
Reading Challenges - I am so impressed with all the children who are trying extra hard to complete the reading challenge. Our last treat was a disco and the children have decided on a PJ afternoon for completing the lastest challenge.
In P.E, Miss Irving, has been developing the children's tennis skills. We have also had 'Cricket Chris' into school helping Year 6 learn cricket.
In music, Mr Strachen has been helping using to read simple music and perform simple sequences.

OVERVIEW - AUTUMN 2|
Hello everyone. First of all I’d like to say how lovely it is to be back at RHS. Mrs Blair has done a fantastic job in settling the children into Year 6. My aim is to continue to build on these high standards she has set and continue to prepare the children for their SAT’s.
This half – term, Year 6 will be doing lots of exciting things. In Maths, we will be recapping previous skills and building on this. We will be looking at multiples, factors and prime numbers. We will also be focusing on fractions and arithmetic.
In Literacy, we will be continuing to use Power of Reading and are currently working on The Silver Donkey by Sonya Hartnett. Through Power of Reading, we aim to build in many different text types to give the children an opportunity to use a range. SPAG will continue to be taught in the morning. We will be focusing on spelling rules and we will be ensuring we know how to spell the essential words set by the Government. Speech punctuation will also be a focus.
Topic this half – term - we will be looking at Maya Civilisation. We will find out who the Maya people were, where they lived and the significance they had. Again will be using lots of our Literacy skills during our topic work.
In art, we will be focusing on textiles and our aim is to build this in with our Literacy topic. Our main focus will be looking at how textiles can tell a story.
Also this half - term we have our author week to look forward to, Science week and Film week where we will visit the cinema.
As of yet, the Reading Challenge treat is yet to be revealed but we are hoping all Year 6 rise to the challenge.

Continuing our printing unit we created a relief printing block with a Mayan design using string.
World Book Day|
The children looked wonderful in their World Book costumes. We had a range of different characters from Dennis the Mennis to Gangster Granny and Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz.
Continuing our art unit on printing we today created printing blocks with a mayan theme linked to our history topic. We used a polystyrene block and created a print by drawing onto the block. We then covered the tile in paint and rollered it onto our page.
Year 6 finished their week of festivals with the traditional Pancake races. The concentration on their faces were a delight to see, then we tasted fresh pancakes that had not landed on the floor!
We were visted by Helen O'Grady who ran a drama workshop with us in school. The theme was a 'sleepover'. She taugh us how to mime, project our voices and how to articulate words clearly.
On Tuesday 2nd of February we linked up with the Cosmic classroom in Liverpool and took part in a live webcast with British astronaut Tim Peake. This was an amazing opportunity to talk to an astronaut who was actually orbiting the Earth.
He is currently working on the ISS (International Space Station) whizzing around Earth every 90 minutes.
He discussed how the ISS is travelling so fast that gravity cannot pull them towards the earth and showed us what happened when he moves around the spacecraft. He also showed us how water behaves in space. He discussed what he could see out of his window as he was travelling across the Atlantic Ocean towards the coast of Africa which he said was a beautiful country to look at from space.
STORY TELLER- IAN DOUGLAS|
On Friday we were visited by story teller Ian Douglas who came and told us a fantastic story. He doesn't use books only his amazing imagination, characters and expression.
The story he told us was about a kid called Jack who had a range of forfeits to complete and is stranded in the ocean, the story followed what happened in his eventful life.

On Thursday 3rd December year 6 had a visit from 'Childline'. The children enjoyed learning about the importance of Childline and how children and young adults can access and use it. They took part in several activities such as; an assembly, questions and answers, group discussions and practical work.
A class poem by year 6- we created this class poem as a warm up to our literacy unit of work.
We had to play a game called ‘telling lies’ where we thought of different lies to tell about the sun, the moon, the stars and the sky. We then collated our sentences in a class poem as we began to collate them we decided we would try and make it rhyme.
The clouds are like horses forlocks, wisping in the sky,
Clouds give us rain when they start to cry.
Stars disappear in daytime when their electricity runs out,
Raindrops appear when the clouds are about.
The moon is an asteroid in orbit of earth,
Stars appear when the sun gives birth.

We had a fantastic street dance workshop this morning where we learned a dance to Bruno Mars Uptown Funk.
We were taught all the moves and then at the end the boys and girls had a dance off!
We really enjoyed it!
Year 6 had a visit from St John's Ambulance today. They had the opportunity to learn lots of important life saving skills. First, they learnt how to put an injured person into the recovery position. Next, the children learnt about injuries that needed bandaged and how to put on the bandges. Finally, they learnt about the importance of having a first aid box and knowing what needs to be included in them.
On Monday we welcomed Julie Harrison into school to help us create a felt wall hanging.
Our design was based on the theme of rememberance as we are studying World War One as our current topic.
Some parents also managed to find some time to pop in and help. Once it is dry Julie will bring it back to school and it will be displayed in the main entrance. The children collaborated well and we are very proud of our finished item.
World War 1 Visitor|
On Tuesday we welcomed Tommy into school from Tullie House. Tommy told us about himself and his friend Wilfred who fought in the war as young men. He showed us an authentic uniform and weapons as well as pictures and other memorabilia from the war. We sang marching songs which soldiers would have sung to keep their spirits up. It was a fantastic start to our topic.
BUG HOTEL UPDATE!|
We have been continuing to work on our bug hotel. We now have a lovely new sign and a stepping stone footpath all made by the children and Mr Irving. We can't wait to meet the new inhabitants!
Today Year 6 have been collaborating well and they have made rain gauges as part of our geography topic. The children had to follow instructions to create a homemade rain gauge. We then constructed a table in which we will collect our data and discussed how we will keep it fair and made predictions about the rainfall in our school. We then began writing our own set of instructions of how to make a rain gauge. We will collect the data over the next week then diplay this in graphs and analyse our findings before making a conclusion.
Collaboration in Literacy|
As a school we are trying to embed the philosophy of BLP (Building Learning Power) where the children develop the skills and understanding of several different learning behaviours. At the moment in Year 6 we are focusing on collaboration and trying to improve how we work together, speak to eachother and support each other in our learning.
Collaboration is an important skill we feel needs to be developed first in our school. Today we have been preparing a verbal presentation looking at persuasion and the features of a persuasive text.
We are writers|
We are trying really hard in Year 6 and the school as a whole to develop and improve our writing skills. We have been making the most of every opportunity to write and do so at length along with dveloping the skill of revising, editing and redrafting. We have been making sure we transfer the skills and techniques we learn in literacy and SPAG into all our lessons wherever possible. We are trying really hard to write imaginativley ensuring we show a range of punctation, word types and language techniques.
Following our visit from united utilities we have been focusing on the water we use in geography. We have looked at the water cycle and have created an imaginative piece of writing pretending we are H2O a friendly water droplet who makes his way around the water cycle. Pupils used the writing skills and created a humorous journey through the various stages of evaporation, condensation, and precipitation.
Under Construction-BUG HOTEL!|
Yesterday (30.9.15) construction began for our brand new Bug Hotel. A group of Year 6 children and Mr Irving set to work buuilding a hotel for all or resident minibeasts and small creatures who live in our vast school grounds. The children used branches, pallets, pipes and bricks to begin the construction. This will be an ongoing project which we will develop over the coming weeks. It will support our science topic which is living things, classfication, evolution and inheritence as well as developing our eco friendly initiatives we have running in school.
Feel the force|
Year 6 enjoyed their trip to Lakes College today to watch the Feel the Force roadshow delivered by a guest speaker from the London Science Museum. The children learned about Sir Issac Newtons laws of motion and the forces, Gravity, air resistance, magnetism and friction.
Year 6 have been studying Kensuke's Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo to begin this term and are really enjoying it. The children have been really enthusiatic and are producing some lovely writing which they are very proud of. They have been focusing on decription and using imaginative language in their pieces of work. They have written a descriptive piece detailing how they felt when they fell off the Peggy Sue and became marooned. They have also written SOS messages in bottles after they arrived on the island.
STEM Electricity Workshop|
On Friday 18th September we spent the whole day taking part in an electricity workshop delivered by STEM. During the workshop we learnt about electricity-where it comes from, what we use it for, the dangers associated with electricity and how to make an electical circuit.
United Utilities Water Workshop|
Today we were visited by Sam who works for United Utilities. The aim of the session was to educate the children about how they can save water everyday. The children didn't realise how much water they actually used until they added it all up. The children have made a save water promise and will try every day to use one simple trick to save water. e.g. turnming off the tap when brushing their teeth or using the small flush on the toilet. The children also learned where water comes from in the first place.
Year 6 have started multiskills training today and this will last for a few weeks. The children really enjoyed it and worked well as individuals as well as collaborating as a team. I'm sure you will agree thier new PE kits look great!
Starting this September Year 6 embarked on the new national curriculm where the aim is for children to become masters of the curriculum. The children will be required to not simply move on if they have achieved an objective but to deepen their knowledge and understanding in that subject area. We want children to become acomplished writers, mathematicians, geographers, historians, artists, designers, linguists, readers and scientists. To do this children need to deepen their skills and understanding not simply regurgitate facts. We want them to be problem solvers and ask questions of what is happening in and around their learning.

Pirates of The Curry Bean|
Our summer production was a HUGE success. The junior children worked so hard and the end show was brilliant.
Pirates of The Curry Bean was a comical adventure following the adventures of the Periwinkle family as the searched for the treasure on the mysterious island of Lumbago. Along the way they were caught up with a band of dodgy pirates and the crew of the Crunchy Frog ran by Captain Cod and the hapless Admiral Hornhonker. Not to mention the comedy duo Scuttle and Slack!
Well done everyone and the positive feedback we have had from parents has been wonderful to hear!
Year 5 and 6 Residential Lockerbie Manor July 2015|
We had the BEST time at our residential this year. We arrived on the warmest day of the decade and we were hot! We stopped off at Bitts park on the way for a picnic before our holiday began.
When we checked in we were told the rules and shown around by the manor staff. We then began our first activities, fencing and archery. It was way too hot for fencing so we only had a short session. We then had a delicious tea which has roast chicken or steak pie. After tea we had our night time activities which were blind trail (which was hilarious) and the low ropes. After this we had showers, tuck shop and hot chocolate.
Not much sleeping happened on the first night mainly due to the almighty thunder storm outside. A bolt of lightning hit the manor and the electric was blown! Luckily we weren't camping in the pods outside! That school was very scared!
In the morning we had some very sleepy children! However after a full scottish breakfast we felt revivied. Our first activities today were zip wire and abseiling, we had to be very brave as it was very high! After lunch (sausage roll and beans or sandwiches) canoeing and kayaking was next which the children loved and lets just say they got very wet!
After drying off it was tea time and we had pork stroganoff, sweet and sour chicken and stir fry veg finished with a chocolate brownie. Tonight was blind trail and low ropes for the opposite groups and after the rain some of us were very muddy! But that's all part of the fun!
Again we had showers and hot chocolate and let's just say there wasn't a peep out of any rooms tonight -some very sleepy children and teachers!
A full scottish breakfast again ion the morning and it was obstacle course time which the children really enjoyed. Then it was lunch time and time to go home.
The children were exceptionally well behaved and the staff at the manor commented on this. It was lovely to see the children in a different environment and get to know each other better.
Here are some of our classroom displays which we have created this year.
Year 6 visited Stanwix Holiday Park for their end of year leavers treat. We swam in the morning then had a delicious lunch and in the afternoon we went bowling and had some free time in the arcade. We had a great day.
This week we have been visited by some reptiles! We were shown the various animals and allowed to touch a giant albino snake. We learned about how they live, including their diet and habitats.
On Tuesday 9th June Year 5 and 6 visited Whitehaven golf club to attend a big bang science day. When we arrived there were representatives from lots of different collages and work places who use science in their careers. The different places had a range of various science experiments and demonstrations for the children to take part in and explore different areas of science and engineering. We also watched a science show and this explored how sound works and travels as well as some optical illusions.
LIONS OF ZULULAND|
We recently had a visit from a group of people from Zululand. They visited school for the whole day. They began the day with a wonderful performance of dance, costume, music and songs. We loved it although some of our younger school friends found it rather scary!
We then visited a range of workshops with our visitors. We learned about their culture and how to speak their language. We looked at traditional clothing and weapons and drew them in an art workshop. We learned a traditional song and dance.
At the end of the day we all performed together and showed our parents what we had learned.
To enhance our detective/mystery story writing topic we looked at being our vey own CSI detectives. We looked at Sherlock Holmes -The Hound of the Baskervilles in literacy and then we tried writng our own detective stories. In topic we looked at the techniques used by the police to find evidence at crime scenes. We looked at taking and finding fingerprints and how your teeth can be a form of identifocation.
In SPAG we looked at a series of lessons called death at the Spag bol and this required us to use our skills and knowledge in SPAG to eliminate suspects and try and catch the killer.
WORLD BOOK DAY|
On Thursday 5th March 2015 we celebrated world book day in school. We dressed up as our favourite characters and we brought in books we like to read.
In the afternoon we watched a webinar by England footballer and author Frank Lampard.
This half term our topic is The Titanic. We will be looking at primary and secondary sources of information and discussing the values of both. We will be trying to discover who we think was ultimately responsible for the tragedy. We will be researching individuals who were on board and what happened to them. We will be writing diary entries from these passengers and looking into the different classes of traveller. We have completed some beautiful sihouette pictures of the Titanic using painting and cutting techniques.
